In 2017 the Sports and Entertainment Marketing II class had there 8th Annual Slam Jam. Our goal is to raise awareness to the community by educating them about the dangers of drunk driving and showing them the consequences it could have on their own lives. We wanted to raise money for a memorial bench in loving memory of Dana Wilson, Ryan Menke, and John Rossi whom were all former students of Laney. We also hoped to have a lasting impact on the communities future decisions about drinking and driving. We raised a total amount of about $2000 with selling candy, our expo events as well as our ticket sales for the basketball game. On average someone is killed in the U.S by a drunk driver every 40 minutes to represent this statistic during our week of awareness we held a "Mourn Monday" which A student dressed up as a “Grim Reaper”. Every 40 minutes the Grim reaper went into a class and took a student out of class (this student as well as the teacher knew ahead of time so no one was not be alarmed but the other students in the class). The selected student then got his/her face painted white and put on a t-shirt with a statistic on it, after that the grim reaper placed the student back into class and this student will not be able to talk for the rest of the day.
