Sports & Entertainment Marketing II Event of 2013
In 2013, The Sports and Entertainment Marketing ll Class hosted the 4th Annual Slam Jam to raise awareness on the dangers of Distracted Driving. The week of Awareness illustrated the severity and consequences of an actual crash through a Mock Accident displayed by ALE, and a powerful, wholehearted speech from Tammy Garlock about the tragic car accident her son was involved in. To add a fun and interactive twist on the event the Sports Marketing Team added the "SlowDown ShowDown" and "Down with Distractions, up with Life Expo" to the week of awareness. The "Slowdown Showdown" was an intense teacher vs teacher Sumo Wrestling match between Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Hall, in which Mrs. Williams was the victor. The "Down with Distraction up with Life Expo" was its own event in which, local businesses came to Laney, and gave students an interactive, learning experience about the dangers of Distracted Driving. They also conducted research to find out the amount of Laney students that were distracted while driving, and discovered that after the Slam Jam the number of students driving with distractions decreased from 77 to 42 percent. In the End, with help from the SAVE Club and a Project Ignition Grant they managed to raise $2,200 dollars for the "Dying changes Everything Organization", which will go towards helping continue their effort of spreading the word about the need for safe driving habits.
