Sports Entertainment Marketing II Event of 2012
EA Laney's 3rd Annual Slam Jam was concluded on Wednesday, May 30th, with the presentation of a $2200 check donated to Joy Wade of the Pretty In Pink Foundation. The Slam Jam was created in 2009 by one of Mr. Lewis's Sport/Entertainment II Marketing classes, combined with service learning, as a tradition to bring awareness of current issues within the school and community, while creating camaraderie and school spirit. Through service learning, the students investigated an issue through research, surveys, and social media. The top 5 were then presented to a mock advisory board, and the top choice was selected through a point system. Laney's Sports/Entertainment II Marketing class raised the money through several fundraisers like: "Change for Change", Hat Day, ribbon sales, raffles, and the Slam Jam itself. This years Slam Jam consisted of pregame events like a bag toss for the raffle tickets, bungee run, a Kona Ice truck, and an awareness expo consisting of materials and information from the Pretty In Pink Foundation, Mary Kay, and researched and created material made by other classes in cross-curricular connections. Concession stands and merchandise sales were also included in the fundraising and event. Pretty In Pink Foundation serves people diagnosed with breast cancer who have limited health insurance benefits, or in many cases, no health insurance at all. Typically, these people do not qualify for government funded or assisted programs. There was enough money raised from the Slam Jam to assist with chemotherapy, lumpectomy/ mastectomy, consultations/biopsies, office visits, and imaging.
