Sport and Entertainment Marketing II 2018
The 9th Annual Slam Jam
The Slam Jam is a student-led faculty/student basketball event that is planned and implemented by Laney’s Sports/Entertainment Marketing II class that brings awareness through service-learning to current issues within the community.
This year’s Slam Jam was on anti-bullying and creating unity to prevent school violence. There was a lot of talk and media coverage on the recent cases of school violence and shootings around the country. It was very relevant at the time, and it was something that we, as a class, felt was important to educate others around us. This topic had the most significant impact on us as students as school violence can happen to anyone anywhere, and it was time to bring more light to the issue.
Normally, we would make surveys for students to help up chose a topic, but regarding the recent shootings and cases of school violence, it was an easy decision to pick school violence. Once we had the issue, we had to go about planning everything, which meant looking for sponsors and people willing to set up booths for the expo before the game. We had to sell tickets during school hours, and organize the teams for the actual game. Most of the year, and more prevalently closer to the Slam Jam, we sold candy as a class to bring in funds for the event. We had to work together to get everything organized, getting other teachers involved, and getting our topic and the overall event accepted by Ms. Dousharm. Everyone was working hard and as a family to get everything running smoothly.
SOCIAL MEDIA: The social media team corresponded with many things during the 9th Annual Slam Jam. At first, we posted on Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat to raise awareness for our event, as well as our week of recognition. We made posters for the week of knowledge and also promoting the game. We made ribbons in our free time, and we also connected with the advertising team. Before the Slam Jam, we ran errands, like picking up programs from PCSP, running to Walmart for mini basketballs, and transporting the tables, and we also ran lunches for selling tickets. All the things we did had substantial effort put into them, and it all turned out well in the end.
FACILITY MANAGER: During the month that we were planning the Slam Jam we had to make phone calls, and emails to companies so that we could collect activities for students to participate in during the expo, an example of one of the companies would be Redd’s photo booth, our assignment with them was to gather the pricing and make an inquiry with them. We also created advertisements for the bulletin boards in the halls to grab student’s attention for the Week of Awareness. During the Week of Awareness, we had the responsibility of getting student support for the week by asking them to dress up for specific days. Another responsibility we had was to sell candy for the event to help pay for some of the activities and prizes that were in the expo. We were also assigned the task of having to sell tickets during lunch to get fans for the game. One of the most extensive tasks we had was to sketch out the area where the expo was to take place, and show where we thought would be the right place for the booths. Then during the expo, we had to show people exactly where we thought the booths should go. We had to also “sell” people into how to play the game by giving them a proper presentation of the game.
VIDEO: We were given the task to film and make two videos for the 9th Annual Slam Jam. One video was for the Slam Jam advertisement, and the other was a PSA for Talk It Out Tuesday. We had to use a film taken from past Slam Jams to make the advertisement. In the ad, we included information about the Slam Jam; for example, we told what the Slam Jam was, the cost of going, and how it looked. The PSA was for Talk It Out Tuesday. It was about the factors that lead to school violence and what someone can do to prevent it. It came with directions for teachers to talk about the topic in class.
PROGRAM: During the slam jam preparation, we worked to create an application. We had to find all of the sponsors and make sure we had every one of the sponsors on the publication before we sent it. We had the responsibility of making the program blueprint. Getting the names of the students right was difficult because their penmanship was horrible. We did more than just put teams on the program we found quotes, statistics, and pictures. The goal was to make it as colorful as possible. We had to define the slam jam for people who were unaware of what it was. Once we finished the program and sent it to the yearbook class, we ran into some problems after putting the wrong teacher on the agenda. Then we realized we spelled a few names wrong, so we had to fix it then send it back to the teacher. One of the things that surprised us is how we left out some of the slam jam staff. Although we ran into some problems, it all came together in the end.
RESPONSIBILITIES: We used the first few weeks contacting sponsors trying to find businesses to sponsor the events at the Slam Jam. We also had the task of Contacting News Organizations such as WECT and WWAY News with WECT having a story on us. For Sponsors, we had to start Creating a Sponsorship Letter for our team, which took us about a day or two to complete it.
After that, we were Sending and Creating Press Releases for the News, which took us a day or two as well with success. Finally, we were Informing the School with the Announcements by working with Devin to create an announcement form for the week of awareness, which we used every day.
EVENT MANAGEMENT: As the members of event management, we completed tasks that included, getting sponsors, coordinating the event, and writing the script. We also secured booths for local nonprofits to talk about what they did. When it came to the sponsors, we took control of contacting them to clinch each sponsorship. We also wrote emails to future sponsors. Writing the script took most of our time because we had to make sure that everything was crisp and put together down to the exact time. When it came to coordinating the event, we had to make sure that the gym was secured and that the school recognized the Slam Jam as an event that would take place on May 10th. We were successful and put on a great Slam Jam.
