The 6th annual Slam Jam: Celebration of life event by E.A Laney high school, showed great attendance for the event as well as our "Love your life" expo. We arrived at the topic of teen suicide originally by surveying over 400 people and getting the options for a "theme" narrowed down. From there we took the choices from a weighted panel, which consisted of the administration and many students that was aware that our event and how it could have a big part in bringing awareness to the topic we decided to choose. We decided that teen suicide prevention would be the most influential topic. Our target audience primary focused on the students at Laney along with other teens in our local community. Statistics showed that suicide is the second leading cause of death among the ages 10-24. We decided to split the class into groups and began work on all of the events that we planned. We worked with many outside sponsors such as the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention and Coastal Care to put together a walk for suicide prevention, an expo to celebrate life, and of course the Slam Jam. There were 623 people recorded being at the expo, and there were over 300 people at the game. The out of darkness walk that we helped organize raised over $2,500 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. There were over 100 people at the walk. The money raised by the Laney Slam Jam was over $2,000 and is going to start a peer group for the students and faculty here at Laney.
